Life and Suffering

In Japan some 800 years ago the Buddhist monk, Shinran compared life to an ocean of suffering. ”The painful sea of birth and death knows no bounds. Long have we been suffering,” he wrote. We are born into this ocean of suffering and we must keeping swimming if we are to survive. In this ocean waves of suffering continually wash over us. We drink salty water and suffer. Some people have given up and drowned. Like the waves of an ocean, suffering is ceaseless. This is why Sakyamuni Buddha said that life is suffering.

However, to look at suffering head on, is the first step towards true happiness.
